The portrait on the 10,000 yen note issued in 2024 is of Eiichi Shibusawa. He established Japan’s first bank and was involved in about 500 major businesses. His business philosophy, summarized in “The Analects and the Abacus,” is still highly regarded today. He advocated for working for the benefit of society to make a profit and also contributed to welfare efforts. Shibusawa believed that economic activities should transcend borders and be dynamic, independent of government control. He also said, “Experience is a kind of learning.”
