President Biden links economic slowdown in China, Japan, and India to ‘xenophobia’

President Biden attributed the economic slowdown in China, Japan, and India to ‘xenophobia,’ during a fundraising event for his 2024 re-election campaign, stressing the role of immigration in U.S. growth.
Biden emphasized the positive impact of immigration on the U.S. economy, stating, “One of the reasons why our economy’s growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants.” His comments come as the International Monetary Fund forecasts a deceleration in growth for each country in 2024, ranging from 0.9% in highly developed Japan to 6.8% in emerging India. Biden’s remarks mark the beginning of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
