Are BRICS countries already challenging the US-led world order? | The Bottom Line

The American empire has peaked “and we are on the way down… and we try to hold on”, says Richard Wolff, professor emeritus of economics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, who notes that the BRICS coalition of economies (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) is gaining an edge over the United States.

Wolff tells host Steve Clemons that it’s “a very difficult experience for Americans” to realise that they lost wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. And despite unconditional support from the US, Israel will not be able to prevail in the long run.

“Israel is a country of a few million people and is not going to control and run the Middle East … with or without the United States,” argues Wolff.

  1. GDP should be measured using purchasing power parity (PPP) to get a more accurate picture of a country's actual production. By that measure, China is well ahead of the U.S., and Russia ranks as the fourth-largest economy in the world.

  2. I also think what israel doing is too much now, blindly killing civilians is a war crime. They are being killed for what ?
How many people were killed ? even Israel doesn't know!

People just see the numbers and I imagine their lives , each and everyone was a person like me and you! Everylife is precious, they should discuss the terms with border line being no more further killings….

  3. I wonder why prof wolf didn't give a direct answer to the complex question about the dollar…why can't the Ruble or the Yuan or Rupee be bundled together to replace the dollar? If I understand prof Wolf correctly, he said when the US$ became the reserve currency there were no challenge ( most countries we destroyed after WW2) but now there are many competitions within Brics as to how and which currency should be the next world reserve currency. Is that the answer? After all, there are no assurances that China would not abuse the privileges of the yuan being the world reserve currency much like how the US had abused such privileges?

  4. Freedom, Equality and financial advancement from a bunch of autocratic countries that repress and enslave their own population? common people use your brain.

  5. Well well well 😏 time will tell.

Gaddaffi and saddam tried it and capitalist international finaciers got their pet dog NATO to take them out and steal their nations wealth as usual

  6. We should be afraid and cautious. If the West unleash its full force as a last effort to save their global dominance. They can do anything….😢😢

  7. Does adding more and more countries make the BRICS alliance more powerful or less powerful? There is little agreement among the original five members. How will the wider group ever reach a meaningful consensus to create institutions?

  8. Brazil is protaguese and south Africa is english..theyre European. they literally chase doen blacks and murder them to prevent them from becoming successful..these nations cannot be BRICS ..they'll undermine you and sell you to Europe.

  9. Let the US stock market run , so Americans can build new millionaires and turn this around. There are so many people with great ideas , money is keeping those ideas in the grave

  10. none of these countries have anything in common except their hate for the west – They are ridiculous and if China for example becomes the world's no 1 superpower you will see that these very same countries will create a new partnership against China. None of these countries have anything similar to one another, Russians and Chinese are very different people, indians and chinese are not really friendly and its a matter of time before China invades parts of India, All of this is frankly ridiculous, but hey they will found out soon enough.

  11. "While the United States has focused on sponsoring wars, establishing military bases and imposing sanctions on other nations, China has been cultivating relationships with countries worldwide and bolstering its economy."

  12. very happy to see Al Jazeera finally invited professor Wolff to their show. professor Wolff always tells what it is apart from politica's bias. great show indeed!

  13. I'm a bit surprised this brought on a guest with this type of viewpoint and actually let him speak. Good job on this one Al Jazeera, in the past I felt a really western bias reporting. This one feels more realist and balanced.
