Canada Cutoff The US and Export Oil To Japan at 0% Tariff Days After Deal With China

Big moves are happening in the global oil market, and Canada just shook the table. In a surprising turn, Canada is ramping up oil exports to Japan while scaling back its reliance on the U.S. But what caused this sudden shift? Is this a strategic economic move or a reaction to mounting trade tensions? Let’s break it all down

For years, Canada has overwhelmingly depended on the United States for its oil exports. In fact, more than 90% of their oil heads south to the U.S., making it Canada’s biggest customer by far. The relationship seemed stable—until now.

The U.S. and Canada have long been each other’s largest trading partners, but Trump’s newly proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports have thrown that relationship into turmoil. This decision, which also includes tariffs on Mexico and China, is part of Trump’s broader strategy to push for a renegotiation of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. However, many experts warn that this move could hurt both economies, with rising prices, disrupted supply chains, and potential job losses on both sides of the border.

Canada, unwilling to be bullied economically, immediately announced retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods. The initial retaliation list targets $155 billion in American exports, including agricultural products like corn, wheat, dairy, and beef and also Liquor and beverages like American whiskey, wine, and beer which are of high demand in Canada.

Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson also hinted that Canada might impose an export tax on oil, a direct counterstrike aimed at driving up U.S. fuel prices. Given that Canada supplies over 4 million barrels of oil per day to the U.S., this would significantly impact American consumers.

Now enter Japan—one of the world’s biggest energy importers. Japan has long depended on the Middle East for its oil, but with rising geopolitical tensions, it’s looking to diversify. Canada, seeing an opportunity, is now looking to increase oil and liquefied natural gas shipments to Japan.

This move is part of a larger trend as Canada is working on several LNG projects, including LNG Canada, Cedar LNG, and Woodfibre LNG, all located on the Pacific coast. These projects will give Canada direct access to Asian markets, reducing its dependence on U.S. pipelines. For decades, Canadian oil has flowed almost exclusively southward through pipelines, primarily to U.S. refineries that turn it into gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products. This setup made sense when trade relations were stable, but over the past few years, tensions have been rising.

Increasingly protectionist policies in Washington, combined with disputes over pipelines like Keystone XL, have led Canada to question whether putting all its eggs in the U.S. basket is still a smart move. And then added to the looming tariffs, there’s also the global energy crisis—Russia’s war in Ukraine, Middle Eastern instability, and rising energy demand in Asia have all played a role in reshaping global oil flows. Canada’s government, along with major energy producers, is making it clear that they don’t want to be caught in a vulnerable position.

  1. Tell him Keystone XL pipeline WILL be complete! THEN, tell IT, the XL pipeline WILL go WEST to join Trans Mtn. & Pacific & sales to Japan, China etc. Keystone WILL continue DIRECT EAST to the ATLANTIC & FRIENDS/allies in the EU & beyond! But, NOT SOUTH! ALL LNG possible will also be diverted to sales overseas! Ya don't need anything, OK? THAT'S what ya get! ALL that can be MOVED to new markets, WILL BE! Cdn Gov't CAN'T do anything else & survive! So, kiss Cdn oil/LNG supplies GONE along with anything else Canada can sell/deliver to the world! Once diverted, it WON'T come back either. Just to expensive. We will SELL to whomever we can & want but, NOT USA again, so, to be polite, YOU sir, can go to ………!

  2. Well! The mess Trump has made for the USA has certainly become a blessing for Asia, huh? I'm in America. Wonder how much more we're gonna be paying for gas and other commodities.

  3. The best thing about Canada is that it’s not the USA and never will be 🇨🇦 we don’t take threats to our sovereignty lightly . We will never forget and never trust the American Government again ! Boycott all thing’s American!

  4. He got it all wrong. No shock and no surprise. USA has been depending on oil import from Canada. Canada had had enough after tariffs, threats about annexing Canada and lies about USA supporting Canada. Most of the world prefers free trade. USA is isolating themselves from the rest of the world. I hope they wake up.

  5. No one is listening to Canada!!! It's not because of the tariffs, it's because tRump wants to make them the 51st state and actually referred to Trudeau as a 'Governor'. This will never resolve well.

  6. Canada integrating energy production into the US did not make Canada stronger, it made America's desire to invade Canada stronger.
Canada should tax oil exports into the US by $400B USD and increase it dollar for dollar to each of Trump's tariffs.
Canada should also decouple its oil pipeline from the US to ports of international export and have its own government operated gasoline refinery to supply Canada's fuel needs.
Canada should add nuclear power plants across the country to cover 99.99% of all energy consumption.
Canada should build its own arsenal of short and medium range rockets and build NBC warheads for those rockets to have the capability of wiping out all life in the USA for 40 years.

If Canada doesn't do these things, then Canada will become Trump's Ukraine.

  7. Alright I've potting soil between my ears also so because the far right staged a coup I wish to be politicaly influenced by china. Let's wave our flags and make an incredibly powerful ugly orphan on our borders for vlad and the far right. Zero mention of how these things happen to actually educate and inform. Propaganda Pierre needs to get a background check to put canada first a personality disorder doesn't make him beyond reproach. Just say no to kopramat for vlad.

  8. Go CANADA 🇨🇦 ,CANADA will not be bullied by trump.
When it comes to someone trying to bully our great country, we as canadians stand TOGHTER AND STRONG.

  9. 100% tariffs on tesla cars, stop electricity supply to NY, MI and MN and selling more Canadian gas and oil to Japan, Korea, China and EU will teach trump and musk much needed lesson.
