Japan “extremely disappointed” over Trump’s reciprocal tariffs

Japan is “extremely disappointed” after sweeping tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters in Tokyo, Ishiba said Japan had requested the United States exempt his country from the measures, which will include a 24 per cent tariff on Japanese imports to the United States.

Japanese beverage giant Suntory is looking to shift where it markets its spirits across the globe as it prepares for a potential trade war, its new president Nobuhiro Torii said.

Japanese officials did not indicate possible retaliation but questioned whether the tariffs were consistent with World Trade Organization agreements and whether some of the U.S. calculations about Japan’s tariffs were accurate.

  1. As a Japanese, I find it very pleasant to interact with Canadians, because unlike that country, we can interact regardless of political circumstances.
Japanese politicians are useless because they have been dependent on the US for 80 years since the end of the war. Since Nixon suspended the US dollar's gold convertibility in 1971, the US dollar has maintained its status as "monopoly money" only through its military power and reliability in oil trading, but Trump has thrown that away himself, so all we need to do is rebuild the supply chain without the US. The US military is already inferior to Russia and China, and oil trading is not only in US dollars. If the pressure from the US disappeared, both Canada and Japan could develop further and cooperate more closely.

  2. They're not "reciprocal tariffs" so stop calling them that. Australia charges the US zero tariffs and has had a 10% tariff imposed. That's not what reciprocal means. Oh and btw Australia has a large trade deficit with the US. Boycott American products.

  3. Hey Japan, we love your liquor! Send over your excess to Canada and undercut the American liquor. There's lots of space in our store shelves now!

  4. Stop calling them "reciprocal tariffs". They are not because Trump initiated it. Words are powerful, so don't use them to make their actions justified.

  5. All Japan does is express regrets. In 1941 when the US imposed an oil embargo on Japan, they attacked Pearl Harbor. No more yamato spirit!

  6. As a Mexican, I say Canada Japan and Mexico should boycott US made products and support each others economies instead! We will call it a trilateral union 🇲🇽 🇨🇦 🇯🇵!

  7. The Japanese prime minister's message here is a subtle reminder to Trump that unlike Zelenskyy, he has cards. And he's considering which one to play.
