Tourism has transformed Kyoto but the information online has stayed the same

🚨It’s finally here! Beyond The Tourist Trail: Kyoto Edition is a comprehensive, all-inclusive travel guide of 30+ of my favourite unique, alternative locations and food experiences in Kyoto that’ll see you avoiding the crowds, supporting the local economy where it counts and having an amazing trip! 🤩 I lived in Osaka (right next to Kyoto) for 8 years so I know the city like the back of my hand and I’m all too familiar with the “hidden gems” articles try to sell you on. A lot of Kyoto guides online are written by people who’ve never actually been there and are just recycling information from elsewhere (I actually knew someone who did this 😳) so it’s easy to get caught out with misinformation and outdated recommendations. I’ve personally visited every location in this guide, sometimes multiple times in different seasons, so you’ll know it’s accurate, up-to-date information, curated for travellers like you!

Also included is seasonal recommendations, must try food experiences, a guide for vegans and vegetarians, accommodation and where to stay, Japanese phrases to use on the go and Japan wide travel tips that I’ve learned from living here for almost 10 years. Every location is accessible with public transport, family friendly and clearly presented with maps and beautiful photography so it’ll take all the stress out of your planning.

🚨My previous guide, Beyond the Tourist Trail (off-the-beaten-path locations accessible from Osaka and Tokyo) has been updated for 2025 with brand new locations included so if you’ve already bought that one, you’ll get an email soon with a link to download it for free and a discount code for the Kyoto guide at 25% off! 👀

After years of research, writing, travelling and photographing, I’m so so proud of the finished product and I think you’re going to love it. The link is in my bio. ❤️

  1. As someone who cannot drive in Japan, I would love it if you could include references to local drivers in your guide. I want away from the busy areas but that also means no or limited public transportation. And if there are no Uber or Taxies then it would be great if there were local drivers or guides that took you to some of these places. At a cost of course … Thank you for the great content.
