How Chinese EVs Are Taking Over Mexico

Mexico has quickly become a major market for Chinese auto makers. Last year, China was the leading car supplier to Mexico, exporting $4.6 billion worth of vehicles. Some Chinese electric vehicle makers – including Tesla-rival BYD – have been looking for a further foothold in North America by exploring factory sites in Mexican states Durango, Jalisco, and Nuevo Leon. For Mexico, the foreign investment is an economic boost and some local governments have offered incentives to Chinese companies exploring factory options. But U.S. officials worry this could be a part of a larger strategy from Chinese auto makers to skirt trade restrictions and enter the American market. Experts say this leaves Mexico in a difficult position of maintaining its crucial relationship with the U.S. without being overly friendly to Chinese investment. Now at the center of a trade war between two major powers, how has Mexico quietly become a hot spot for Chinese EV companies and will the country become a “backdoor” for these cars to drive into the U.S.?

How Chinese EVs Are Taking Over Mexico

  1. i dont think thats what trump meant when he said "those plants will be built in US", i think he was talking about bringing back manufacturing back by forcing "friendly" companies not the chinese

  2. EV's are not and won't be the future with the exception of the rich and early adopters who want to overpay for their cars UNTIL battery technology improves by a large margin. There is hope in Solid state batteries to replace Lithium Ion batteries but it's going to take time and research to make the batteries better. Nothing really to see here, China is going to try an end around the tariffs in place by building factories in Mexico and trying to use NAFTA to get into the US. Doubtful it happens, but it might. China's automakers are government subsidized and as with everything they vastly overproduce the market around the world. Each country must decide whether they want to be beholden to China for things or not.

  3. As we say here in Mexico "sin yolanda maricarmen" (do not cry over the spilled milk) remember: Donald used his presidencial influence to get two factories in Mexico cancelled, both ford and tesla agreed. Now China is profiting from the deal USA didn't want and they don't like it 😂

  4. The USA dint give a rats behind about Mexico untill China came into the picture, the USA doesn't want Mexicans in their border but still wants to control what they do in their own country?what kind of nonsense is that?😂😂😂

  5. detroit has had ample time to respond to this threat, even after with the government putting tariffs in their favor they still are being complacent. Unacceptable.

  6. Wild idea here… I know it’s crazy but what if… American auto makers make some cheaper cars so there’s not as much of a worry? I know it’s pretty controversial because who could even fathom the idea of not squeezing as much profit from your consumer as possible.

  7. Long story short, US automakers want to keep their prices high to make insane profits but dont innovate. So they dont want the competition of an affordable options so they lobby with the government to make sure we(the US people) dont get better affordable options. And if they do let them in they will lay off american workers …. sooooooo Capitalistic GREED … GOT IT👍🏾

  8. While the US is pouring money into LLM cryptos and Tesla (which hasn't done anyhing worth its money in a while) China has been creating cheap solar (among other energy technologies), Cars, batteries, etc.

There are a thousand bad thing I could think about China, but the fact that they can plan long term in and work in projects worth pursuing is not one of them.

  9. "… a country known for its beaches and ideal trade proximity to the US."
You forgot the yellow tint in all Hollywood movies. That's what it's even more known for.

  10. So when china exports it's called overcapacity then by that logic apple and Tesla are also overcapacity because they are selling to worldwide consumers…pathetic propaganda CNBC do better
