Japan’s Seven & I Seeks Government Protection After $38 Billion Approach

Bloomberg has learned that Seven & i Holdings Co., the Japanese operator of 7-Eleven stores, wants the government to require prior notification of any purchase of its shares above 10%. This would raise a potential hurdle for Laval, Quebec-based operator of the Circle K and Couche-Tard chains Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc.’s buyout proposal to proceed. Stephen Engle reports on Bloomberg Television.

  1. The argument isn't as bad as it sounds superficially. Desaster relief by having an active network of services and food delivery makes some sense.

  2. Because it’s not just 7 & i, the other big convenience stores Lawson and Family mart are also vulnerable. Like I said many days ago, the deal has nothing in it for 7 & i group. The other company stock price is overpriced because of their petroleum holdings. If you strip back the petroleum exposure, the Circle K stock is nothing. Petroleum stocks are all overvalued now, we are entering a period of new non- petroleum products. See how long this stock survives after downturn in oil.

  3. All I hear in this waste of space segment is noise on an otherwise non-issue but because there's familiarity with the 7/11 name/logo/branding, everyone is jumping on this to seem relevant and generate clicks/traffic/buzz. Please just shut up and go back to your sheltered trader water cooler world. I am saying this as a person who has worked in investment banking/trading IT in Tokyo for several large international firms and has a VERY good view of everything going on including the trading floors.

  4. They did no research. 7&I is one of the major banks and are used by local governments as a trusted center. You can pay your taxes, utilities, do banking and by basic groceries. They are on every corner even in rural areas. They will never let some hedge fund by them up. Go get Family Mart if you want to expand.

  5. Seven & I Holdings should be the buyers of Couche-Tard, not the other way around. Circle-K is a far inferior brand than 7-Eleven in convenience stores here in the US and in Japan 7-Eleven is also a dominant brand. Since Seven & I Holdings is a conglomerate of other businesses I hope the government backs them.

  6. Seven in Japan makes the best ham and egg sandwiches. I had so many for breakfast when I was in Japan earlier this August.

I wouldn’t even touch Seven egg salad sandwiches in USA for fear of food poisoning. 😅

  7. There should be a law in place that bars businesses here in America from selling to other countries or entities not located in this country or not having citizenship in this country. it doesn’t matter if it’s food auto parts another country having control of anything here in the United States is dangerous but it’s all about the dollar bills, right
