Japan’s next prime minister keen to boost the military | DW News
Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party has selected its new leader, who is also set to become the country’s next prime minister. The former defense minister Shigeru Ishiba will replace current leader, Fumio Kishida, who suffered a series of financial and political scandals. Ishiba has pushed for a boost in military spending and has also called for the creation of an Asian version of NATO. The former defense minister argues that Japan’s military should be able to respond firmly if territorial airspace or waters are breached.

"The enemies of the past is the allies of tomorrow"
Indonesia been playing both sides since the fall of suharto.. Don't know why we need to pick a side now..
It already happened un the past. Look for SEATO.
There has to be a NATO version in Asia , once a country is united it brings balance.
as a south korean… don't want to be involved in silly japanese senkaku island dispute against china. smart japanese… want to defend their land using korean bloods.
I hope this succeeds, but I don't know will Japan be able to contribute due to their constitution
Way to go Japan 🎉
As an Australian I say yes to his Asian NATO
NATO FOR EUROPE..
SATO FOR ASIA..
Full support from many Indians like me.
Let Taiwan 🇹🇼 join too?
NATO+Japan
Please tell me this one isn’t pro mass immigration to Japan 🙏
Japan, Philippines, India, South Korea, Taiwan
Malaysia n Singapore doesn't need this treaty cuz both of them have the FPDA treaty with ANZAC n Britain.
This alliance is likely to fail as East Asia are extremely divided and separated, every country in East Asia tends to hate each other for either land dispute, historical reason, or political reason. I don’t think this alliance will come to effect, it will likely to be an alliance to be forgotten in the future because it’s completely useless. South Korea will not join it because of the land dispute in Dokdo Island, joining it would literally mean Korea will need to admit Dokdo is part of Japanese territory. I don’t think Taiwan will likely join either because of its land dispute with Japan and China. Unless China invade Taiwan the alliance could come to effect, but for now, it is a completely useless alliance
a true military power is needed in east asia but not in the shake of NATO but for its own sov·er·eign·ty
Wow all these warmongering westerners now wants to make Asia as their official battleground.
No need for the Philippines to join NATO. No sane country would want to colonize the Philippines and assume the obligation to feed an impoverished nation with 100 million citizens. Spain did not even profit from the Philippines and the Philippines was heavily subsidized by the Viceroyal of Mexico. It was just a Spanish port for Spain's Asian affairs.
Make Japan Great Again!
the question is: Will the Communists Countries 'Vietnam' and 'Lao PDR' join? 😅
With sense and balls
It's interesting to see comments supporting Japan's remilitarisation attempt as if the Japanese imperialists didn't start the WW2 and bought devastating loss of lives in Asia and from other parts of the world. I doubt if our humans are able to learn lessons through history.
Socially progressive, Military and Monetary hawk. What a combo.
So… SEATO 2.0?
In honest truth and disclosure science in economics and natural science have a fact basis. If China and North Korea dont like the policy, but allies like Taiwan and South Korea do, I would say we are heading in the right direction.
It shouldn’t be “Asian NATO” it should be Asia-Pacific NATO if Oceania countries will be joining.
Problems. : GDP is down, No so good relation with 3 neighbours, Aging Society. So many natural disaster Earthquake etc
I like this guy already like including Asian NATO to spend % of their GDP so that fairness in defense will be put in test and other stuff.
