What if Japan & South Korea sided with China on US tariffs? | Ian Bremmer | World In :60
If China, Japan, and South Korea formed a united front, what kind of leverage would they have in negotiating against US tariffs? I think they are heading in that trajectory. The question is, will it be enough to keep Syria stable and away from descending into civil war? Why does Trump want to take Greenland?

@Ian_Bremmer shares his insights on global politics this week on World In :60.
If China, Japan, and South Korea formed a united front, what kind of leverage would they have in negotiating against US tariffs?
Oh, if that were to happen, they’d have incredible leverage because China’s the second-largest economy in the world, Japan’s the third. This would be a really, really big deal. Except for the fact that it’s not going to happen. They’re trade ministers did just meet and they’ve had some interesting coordinated statements. They do a lot of trade together, and they want to continue that. But the fact that the security of South Korea and Japan is overwhelmingly oriented towards the US, and they would not want to undermine that, means that they will certainly not see China as a confederate to coordinate with against the United States, not least on trade. The American response would be belligerent. So no, that’s not going to happen.
Will Syria’s newly formed transitional government be enough for Arab and Western leaders to lift sanctions and restore diplomatic ties?
I think they are heading in that trajectory. The question is, will it be enough to keep Syria stable and away from descending into civil war? And there, there’s a huge question because this is a completely untested government, completely inexperienced, no governance background, very little background in terms of military stability, especially with all of the new members, militias that have been integrated from across a very diverse country. And a lot of internal opponents that are sitting back and waiting to fight. So I’m more worried about that than I am about international support. I think largely the international support they need is going to be there.
Why does Trump want to take Greenland?
I have no idea. Maybe somebody showed him a globe from the top and he saw how big it was, and he’s like, “Oh, that’d be kind of cool to have.” It’s not like there’s anything he needs that he can’t get directly from negotiating with Denmark. Plenty of willingness to allow the US to have expanded bases, troops on the ground. Plenty of willingness from other countries in the region to do more in terms of patrolling, build more icebreakers to deal with. The Finnish President, Alex Stubb, who just went to see him golfing with him, spent seven hours over the weekend moving in that direction. But you saw from Vice President Vance, he’s like, “Well, the President wants it. So of course I got to respond to that.” Yeah, but they don’t have any reason. And I do think that it is sufficiently blowing up in their faces on the ground in Denmark and in Greenland, that the Danes understand not to make a big deal out of this and it will eventually blow over. It is annoying to them symbolically, but it doesn’t matter all that much. In that regard, we can spend a little bit less time on it. Okay, that’s it for me. I’ll talk to you all real soon.

The most obvious issue is that most Asian countries are exoirters and overproduce via subsidies. They haven't gotten domestic consumption going
Come on they just did team up together
That's what they're doing now 😂😂😂😂😂
Trump . The swan song
PETE HEGSETH NEEDS TO RESIGN NOW!!!!
Trump's statement on annexing Greenland legitimaties Putin's invasion of Ukraine. It wasn't Trump's idea.
Trump's a child playing with matches in a fireworks factory.
There are US troops in S Korea and Japan, also CIA has had all the dirty secrets against their politicians.
Ian Bremmer is the mouthpiece for globalist Europeans. His views are tilted toward progressive ultra left.
That is just a misunderstanding.
China always approached Japan when they were in danger.
It is not the first time.
Yes. They will because the Americans attitude braking everything. Trump could not do this alone. People wanted to.
I am a Korean and I don't think Japan and Korea will do that. But don't push good friends too tough to breathe so fast. US definitely can ask the others to correct the errors and many will try best.
wow this just one good example of how western thinkers mis intepret and mis understand asian history and social norms.
Japan, Korea, China will never unite against whether it's US or else… its just totally wrong….
As and American, please God may Trump go away. People are turning on him. He is a failed business person, and grifted his way back to the presidency. He will go down as the worst in history.
LOL not going to happen. What a ridiculously ignorant take. Thousands of years of fear, animosity and tension do not go away overnight. Korea’s quite fine trading with China but they know to their deepest core their security and future is with the U.S. And Japan’s anti-China sentiments are barely disguised. There is no pan Asian union. Quite the opposite, centuries of rivalries guarantee that the surrounding Asian countries will almost surely push back against China on fundamental issues affecting their future. Tariffs are an insignificant issue in comparison to security for Korea and Japan.
This is not anything to talk about. China and Japan unite against US? Really?!
No, it’s NOT going to happen. PRC is the biggest security threat directly to S Korea and Japan. No security, no stability and no prosperity. Let alone the export and import among these countries mainly are not complementary.
Oh, the American government "would be belligerent"? Well then, we better not do the obvious things to protect ourselves from American belligerent actions in case the American government might become belligerent. Ian, I think you are severely underestimating the damage the Trump regime is doing. As unimaginable as it may seem for Korea and Japan to cooperate with China there are huge natural forces to push it that way and if America not just abandons but fucks over Japan and Korea it is going to happen. Trump has already planted the seed. I would say it will happen, it's just a matter of how long it will take.
National security interest always trump international trade matters. As China is the threat to national security for Japan, South Korea and most of Southeast Asia and Australia, There is exactly a 0% chance after we’re going to team together with China to oppose US trade policy.
History may make a China, Japan, and South Korean alliance difficult… but they are each others main trade partners, and historic security alliances appear to be on the rocks. While US, Japanese, and South Korean security is intertwined now, South Korea has seen the writing on the wall and has decided that it no-longer wants to be a security client of the US anymore considering US blackmailing of other "allies". This is why they are looking at developing their own independent nuclear deterrence with US support… but we all realise that it will happen regardless of the US position
The only thing holding up South Korean nukes in a functional government for US representatives to negotiate with
The Greenland question matters because it opened up many in Europes eyes that our alliance with the US is over in reality even if its still ongoing on paper for now.
donnie wants greenland for the same reason he wants anything else: someone told him there's money to be made there.
Japan & South Korea will not side with China on US tariffs ! However, all three countries ( as well as most other
countries ) will buy less and less from the US and trade much more outside of the US business circle !
Economic threat is a security threat that will unite nations across the world
Drumpf Tariffing many Countries at once is stupid. Only Canada and China puting partial retaliatory tariffs and boycotts on the US caused uncertainty. When the EU, UK, Mexico, SK, Japan and 20 other Countries are added America is vulnerable. Drumpf has destroyed 80 years of world order, trade and trust that made it rich. America Alone.
What will happen if Trump proclaims martial law shortly?
The question as to why the U.S. government wants to annex Greenland is relatively simple to answer. It is tied to why there is this massive push to annex Greenland right now. While Greenland has been a territory of Denmark for hundreds of years, it's population is on the verge of declaring independence from Denmark. Once this happens, they won't be a member of the E.U., nor will they be a member of NATO. They will be a brand new island nation which will need help to develop their infrastructure and to extract their resources for trade. It's obvious that China would be the best help on both of these two issues, and the U.S. has already felt threatened by Chinese mining companies wanting to operate in Greenland. So, the reason is this: the U.S. would rather attack and colonize Greenland, rather than allow the Greenlanders to democratically choose who they trade and partner with. It's not complicated, nor is it confusing.
Correction https://youtu.be/nG6XtQXy3DU?si=jo4jCD40RJ6RZoUD&t=17: Germany has the 3rd largest GDP: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)
EU+Canada+Japan+South Korea united against Trump
EU+China: coordinate against Trump
EU already signaling to the rest of the world (Latin, South America): We are open for business. We honor contracts and you can trust us.
America will be in the FO stage of FAFO quickly. That is my hope. And it has to hurt many of the ordinary and ignorant people, who voted for Trump.
America First needs to be rephrased into "America Alone, The world (minus Russia, North Korea, Iran) united against America",
Money and prosperity v.s. Military bases? I am not so sure, Ian. Come on, got better arguments 😅?
Trump wants to reduce spending and the military is the biggest issue so they could pull out of S Korea and Japan.
1) CN, JP & ROK aren't jointly responding but they are coordinating. CN state media announced a joint response but ROK threw cold water on it. So, it'll be a joint response but not acknowledged as such.
2) The US has attempted to acquire Greenland multiple times since the 1860s. Strategically it's important, especially the GIUK Gap, it also has resources to exploit – albeit ones that require extreme investment and would struggle to break even for decades – and it fits into a pattern of imperial territorial expansion.
Syria's government 's partner just carried out atrocities against Alawite minority and they want to be taken off the terrorist list?? how about no.
Thank you.
What a shit show . The Mad King destroys it all !! America's allies will do what the hell they like mate if the US is imploding and becoming a rogue nation !! none of us signed up for that !!
Ian is so funny 😂
Japan is 4th now
Yeah, the US is totally vulnerable. We're still spending over a trillion per year on our military (including interest expenses), and at this point our world credibility is shot. Trump imagines the US reindustrializing over this.
There's a next leg down for America, further deindustrialization after our auto industry fails and a century of American humiliation. You can't have two Bush terms and two Trump terms within the span of 25 years and expect a strong nation.
wow – no idea why greenland is a valuable geostrategic territory? it's almost too obvious. gzero gets a zero on that one.
😂I'm loving all of this, because this way the whole world will see who Trump is, and more, what the United States of America is. Now we can see how harmful America is to the rest of the world. By fighting against selfish American politics, I see signs of a better world.
It just happened as how hard do you think it took for those three to agree on anything. Trump is a f*** idiot and evrn Canada as who does that leave left? America is just one country and taking on the entire planet is suicide!!
No one refuses money, except Nowadays USA.
Trump administration is filled with amateurs.
Facts I was saying the same thing like what’s really going in Greenland it’s just a big empty space
THE WORLD HAS NEVER FORGOTTEN IT, we hope that Japan remembers it. Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The aerial bombings killed between 150,000 and 246,000 people, most of whom were civilian’s😢😢😢😢😢😢
THE U.S IS BASICALLY TRYING TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT TO SIGN ANOTHER PLAZA ACCORD CALLED THE MAR LARGO ACCORD..THIS IS THE PLAN. THE U.S WANTS ITS VASSALS TO DESTROY THEIR ECONOMIES, ENGAGE IN CURRENCY MANIPULATION, RAISE THE VALUE OF THEIR CURRENCY, DEVALUE THE DOLLAR AND MAKE AMERICAN EXPORTS MORE AFFORDABLE AND COMPETITIVE GLOBALLY..THEY ALSO WANT TO MAKE ALL AMERICAN VASSALS TO BUY 100 YEAR BONDS THAT WILL NOT MATURE FOR 100 YEARS. BUT TRUMP DOES NOT WANT TO LOSE THE DOLLARS GLOBAL RESERVE CURRENCY STATUS EITHER.. ONLY AN IDIOT WILL DESTROY THEIR OWN ECONOMIES TO SAVE THE U S ECONOMY. ITS NOT GONNA HAPPEN.
"Somebody showed him a globe from the top, and he thought oh that looks big, I want it" 😂😂😂
I don’t think the Greenland thing will blow over. I don’t think the Trump presidency will blow over. We’re stuck with it until he dies, unfortunately.
The reality is they have to sell their products. Unless they have an alternative market to sell their products they do not have much choice except negotiating. These media will blah blah because they hate Trump. But the trade and truth asaociated with it is something different!
They just agreed to a deal…
