South Korea is heading toward a demographic collapse unlike anything the world has seen before. With the lowest fertility rate ever recorded and a rapidly aging population, the country faces a future of economic decline, shrinking cities, cultural erosion, and a vanishing workforce.
By 2060, nearly half of South Koreans could be over the age of 65, and entire regions may be abandoned as the population continues to shrink.
How did South Korea reach this point? Why might it no longer be possible to reverse the trend? And what does this mean for other countries on a similar path?

    Why did we have a Korean War in the 1950’s 😮. Sounds like an Elon Musk thing. Stop DEI and add tariffs. That’s the solution 🤨👨🏿‍💻

    I am very scared of this potential future and of a world without children. Children are wonderful and amazing, but as young person.
    I am afraid to bring a child into the world. Beyond economic issues, it feels cruel somehow. I hope to get over this, have kids, and make the world better.

    근데 이런 사실을 알고 누군가가 해결해주길 바라지만 정작 청년들은 당장 나에게 해가 되지 않으니 바꾸지 않음. 누군가는 하겠지 하며 그냥 미뤄놓고 있음. 물론 나조차도. 애초에 이 거대한 문제를 어떻게 해결해야할지도 모르겠고, 나라에 도움이 되는 정치인을 뽑고 싶어도 멍청한 다른 사람들 덕분에 내 표는 쓸모 없어짐. 이 나라는 그냥 망해야하는 나라가 맞는거 같긴함. 너무 해괴한 나라임.

    People seem to gloss over the fact that a huge chunk of this problem stems from medical advancements keeping older people living longer without having policies to make them productive for longer. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I'm a South Korean. I think, no, unification will be soon. The Kim family will either collapse or come to the peace table to negotiate. Today is President Yoon's Judgment Day. Once unified, everything will be resolved. Korea will continue to move on. Please keep an eye on it.

    다른 무엇보다 가장 심각한 문제는 이에 대한 담론이 전혀 이뤄지지 않는다는거임. 현재 정치인들은 저출산문제에 심각성을 못느끼고 있음. 왜? 어차피 자기들 일 아니거든.

    Practically every first world country is experiencing a fertility crisis, so South Korea is not crumbling on a relative basis. But North Korea and China are.

    The reason for less pollution is probably cause how theres so many pedos and narsasitsic parents that why everyone is afraid of having kids would you wanna have kids if the whole world we all live in is already hell

    Not a Korean, but I've heard a similar concern in America and other countries. My concern is that a constantly growing population is impossilbe to sustain. Earth has limited space and resources. We are already depleting these resources and causing environmental burden through pollution and carbon emissions. While I understand that economically and societally, a growing population is important, I don't believe any of that will matter if we don't have a viable earth to live on. I would be interested in hearing a response to this argument

    Additionally, would increasing the immigration rate address this problem?

    한국은 모든돈이 세금으로 돈이 사라진다 국민들은 그 세금이 어디에 쓰여지는지도 모른다.
    일하는 에너지 소비량은 최상 급여나 수익은 최하
    눈앞에 보여지는것들은 모든게 지난친 세금이 자리를 잡고있다.
    1년365일
    일주일 기준 50시간 이상에 노동을 해도
    20평에 본인에 집은 20년뒤에 하나 작만할수 있을까말까.
    숨쉬고 살기도 바쁘다. 이것이 한국 이라는 나라 구조이다.

    The solution is immigration. Make South Korea attractive to laborers and you'd see Koreaboos around the world maintain that society during the bottleneck years.

    The young generation have been brought up to think that the only path in life is go to good college an then work for a big corporation. This is especially true in Asia.

    Fun fact. The US is also facu g the same issue. For years it's been fixing the issue through immigration to make up the difference……. The current government seems to want to end that.

    And because of the systemic oppression on women by men (patriarchy) a 4B movement started and spread among South Korean women.

    The four core tenets to the 4B movement are:
    – no sex with men (Korean: 비섹스; RR: bisekseu),
    – no giving birth (비출산; bichulsan),
    – no dating men (비연애; biyeonae),
    – no marriage with men (비혼; bihon).

    In Spain we work our asses off (we work more hours than germans and for FAR less money, yay!) and we still can't afford rent. LITERALLY. How on Earth are we going to start a family? We are heading towards neofeudalism!
