Asian stock markets tumble on Trump’s tariff plans
US President Donald Trump has announced tariffs on trading partners throughout the world.
Trump says the taxes on imports to the US will revive American manufacturing after years of what he calls “cheating” by America’s friends and foes.
US stock futures tumbled on the news.
Markets also tumbled across Asia on Thursday morning as traders responded to Trump’s announcement.
The region is home to some of America’s biggest trading partners, including China, Japan and South Korea.
Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna has the latest from the White House and Fadi Salameh is in Tokyo where the Nikkei tumbled after opening on Thursday.
Seijiro Takeshita is a Professor of Management and Information of Innovation at the University of Shizuoka in Japan. He says the broader effects of the tariffs are more concerning than the impacts on individual countries.

Maybe all of the amateur economist and even the so-called expert economist in the comments could explain to me why it’s good when other countries have large tariffs on the United States but it’s bad when the United States has large tariffs on them seems like very strange logic😅

The US has in reality not had any plans to withdraw its military presence from Europe. Demanding that European countries take care more of their own defence is not a sign of that. Previous US presidents have failed to communicate that message clearly enough to their European allies and partners. That`s why President Trump decided to communicate that same old message in a way that also creates action in Europe. Ursula Von der Leyen and all the other European leaders with her should calm down a bit in my opinion. Some of their leaders have been totally confused and even close to a panic attack only because President Trump is so active compared to his passive and sleepy predecessor Joe Biden.
