What Happened To Japanese Products? | ThisConnect S02E02 | #ThisConnect

The Japanese dominated the world in quality and products in the 1970s and 1980s. But lately, their products lag behind the norm in India, and they don’t appear to have a strategy that works towards the changing needs of Indian car and motorcycle buyers. On ThisConnect season 2, episode two, Kartikeya and Shumi discuss how this incredible country and culture lost its way and what the solution is.

  2. Honda doesn't know aerodynamics… Yet they won most moto GPs, as much as 313. 2nd is Yamaha at 245. In last 15 years, Honda won 7, Yamaha won 5 Suzuki won 2 and finally Ducati the only non-jap won twice, And yet, japanese don't know aerodynamics, and yamaha is learning from Europe . I don't know what to say.

  3. Wow… When it comes to Japanese, they're sticking to their old philosophy, they aren't changing!
When it comes to Bajaj, wow they aren't changing, they're sticking together.

But yes I agree with the point of cycling CEOs every 2-3yrs.

  4. Isn't all car manufacturers do the same, I mean creating different brands targetting different customers, GM, VW, Ford everyone is doing… I don't understand what's it has to do with Japan.

  5. Isn't all car manufacturers do the same, I mean creating different brands targetting different customers, GM, VW, Ford everyone is doing… I don't understand what it has to do with Japan.

  6. Karthikya, Brilliant point… Japan is an aging population… And they tops the list in the whole world. So naturally they are slow to change.

  7. Good point Shumi… Can legendary reliability a Brand? May be 'No'.
But who says Toyota wants to be a "Brand", may be they just want to be the most reliable car company for consumers, where people come and buy cars with closed eyes.
And may be for experience, for brand, they're offering you Lexus.

  8. As a Dutchman I worked for an Indian owned company for 1,5 years. I’ll not say more except that one should avoid easy cliches / tropes, even if it becomes difficult to hold back. All over the world the undercurrents are the same: An elite rules and the majority is told to be opinionated about foreigners, being all to glad to do so. This is NOT up to your normal level. And so I stopped watching.

  9. Awesome Podcast !!!!
Shumi's point on Honda Activa was spot on 👌.
We as a Consumer need to demand for the best product and not get used to mediocre products. but Unfortunately its a long way to go…
Few months back my friend was in a dilemma to buy which Scooter EV or petrol that suits him and his mom, and I suggested him the Tvs Jupiter, Suzuki Access and River indie (EV) as they both carry quite a bit of luggage in their commute.
Last month he came with a new Scooter, and guess what it was the Activa and I was not surprised
And when asked why you got Activa, he said that multiple Dealership said that this year already 2lakh units sold in India, it is the best scooter for daily use.
And I said Bro You deserve an Activa

  10. very good video , thumps up, i am big fan of reliablity, but thats not the only market demand today, reliablity 50% rest of the thing is 50% now i assume. I worked with NEC"C" japanese telecom brand , back in 2000-2005 they were like lead in innovation but when chinese and americans came in – NEC"C" becoma old in just 5 years and today veryfar behind. their equipments still works better than other but less advanced. Japanes needs indian CEO who can work with technology + innovation + advance features so that they can meet market demands. we indian expectations are really 60% look and 40% other stuff when we buy car LOL

  11. why dont you both join japanese companies ,, i am serious no joking ,,, japan is really getting old, no question about reliability. but they need to meet the competitor in other aspects ,,, "Arigato" to you both 🙂

  12. you gave a textbook example of Canada and how their immigration works. And how did that work out for Canada ? May be you don't know, Canada is going down the drain.. their healthcare system is broken, they get most of their migration from African countries, Punjabi immigrants (not the cream, but the lowest of the lows who could barely graduate). Yes, Japanese population is going down, but atleast they don;t face the issue of wokeness, and degenerated younger generations, drug problem et al that is very very common in west these days.

  13. I have alaways heard of the conspiracy of US controlling Japan. Till 90's they were given full freedom to grow, but they became too big and started threatening US. So, some subtle changes were made in their policies from which they still haven't completely recovered. I think the alien CEO which Shumi was talking about was US.🤔😉

  14. I disagree with the age thing as iam still seeing Italian brands do what they are doing fantastically. I would say it is more of a cultural thing. Also if we look at 1980’s Japan it is worse than slums in Mumbai. They must have got huge aid for infra I guess, that must have contributed to their growth

  15. Schumi.. is better than say raghuram rajan.. he should also write economist as well in his profile…
Big fan since 20 years .. this conversation shows how talented he is..
This YouTube channel showcased the best of schumi…

  16. Man what is podcast! I never knew I could get this kind of knowledge from two guys talking about Motorcycle. And fun fact, I am not even a motorcycle nerd. The Japanese culture, the generation gap, the money mindset, wow!
