My former roommate was actually a host, he said every night partying and every morning being hungover really wore him down and he himself was working off his father's debts to the Yakuza. One day his dad won big at a casino and paid off his debts and he immediately moved to Australia to get away from the Yakuza cos he knew his father would be in debt again soon. He went rural cos he heard rumors the yakuza also operate in australia via connections to local gangsters so he went rural, went to live in a 10K person town in rural australia working at a grocery store when a few months earlier he was a popular host at a major host club in Tokyo.
He lived that life and has nothing but shame, regret and disgust at those times.

Gonna be real its kind of pathetic as a society for people to be so reliant on host clubs for even a bit of companionship. Japan really needs to normalise just talking to people and meeting them. Because when being a creepy ass stalker is so normalised that the police don't even charge you with anything. You have a society that has a major socializing issue.
It doesn't need to be much. Just saying hello to people, open doors for people, meet people in bars and actually go around making friends at conventions and hobby stores. It starts with having the initiative to say hello and the other person to be receptive to it. You work it out from there. It doesn't have to be so damn restrictive.

Meanwhile, men who go broke in hostess clubs aren’t judged as harshly. Society just sees them as unlucky or "bad at handling money," rather than condemning them the way it does women.
And then there are the comments blaming this on feminism. But let’s be real, Japan doesn’t even have strong feminism. If anything, it’s one of the most patriarchal developed countries in the world. Women still struggle for equal pay, face workplace discrimination, and are expected to follow traditional gender roles. So blaming feminism for women falling into debt at host clubs makes zero sense. If anything, it’s the lack of feminism that keeps women in these cycles, because strong feminist movements would push for financial education, better job opportunities, and legal protections to prevent this from happening.
Also, let’s talk about the whole "Minato woman" stereotype. The idea that certain women in Tokyo's Minato ward live off rich men just reinforces the same patriarchal thinking that created these problems in the first place. It’s not feminism that promotes women spending money on hosts, it’s the exact opposite.
