The price of one 5 kilogram bag of rice has risen 82 per cent since 2024, according to a recent survey by the Japanese government. Concerns over the rise of a staple food amid a flagging economy have prompted the government to take unprecedented measures and release 210,000 tonnes of rice from its one million tonnes of emergency stockpiles.

  1. The same is true in the UK.
I work in a shop, and our mid-size 10kg sack of basmati has increased from £9.99 to £16.99. That's a 70% increase in price.
I usually go for Trophy branded basmati, which is even more. But it is an exceptional quality rice.

  2. lol.
the reason your price increase because now many tourist come to japan
and they are eating your food.
your country already lose population, ofcourse the price gonna down.

  6. The interesting thing is that they seem to blame tourists for the increased consumption… But it is not like Western tourist consume nearly as much rice as locals (simply because they are more used to cereals and aside from a few amounts for the obligatory sushi and onigiri… they do not really appreciate it). I fear it is the increasing number of Chinese tourists who are more used to rice who demand it in higher quantities.

  7. This is all thanks to the greed of JA. The rice “shortage” is completely manufactured to their line pockets with more yen. If you think there’s a rice shortage here, I encourage you to drive around the Japanese country side and see how much rice there is growing.

  8. This video just blaming the heat.. lol. The ruling political party in Japan, the LDP uses rice to rig elections. It’s because the electoral system in Japan favors rural votes. So, the LDP mucks around to secure those high value votes. They put ultra high tariffs on foreign rice imports, buy rice at inflated prices, or even pay farmers NOT to grow rice, all to artificially prop up Japanese farmers and get their votes. So yes, maybe a heat wave is causing problems, but a lot of Japans rice problems are self inflicted wounds created by gvmt bureaucracy, from a party that has only been out of power once since the end of WW2.

  9. China's real estate market has been a key engine of growth, but it’s become dangerously overleveraged. Local governments and banks have piled up massive, often off-the-books debt—much of it tied to unfinished and unsold housing projects—which could trigger a financial domino effect if it unravels. This structural weakness threatens overall economic stability, yet the CCP routinely downplays or even denies the full extent of these risks to maintain an image of controlled, sustainable growth.

  10. The Japanese government shouldn't release emergency rice to control price inflation. They should get their citizens to switch their diet to Udon, Soba, Ramen, etc. What if Japan faces a real emergency from natural disasters and they used up their emergency rice?
