Tokyo stock market closes. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index lost nearly 8% shortly after the market opened. By midday, it was down 6% at 31,758.28. TOKYO, JAPAN – Tokyo stock market wraps up trading for the day as concerns over a tariff-induced global recession continues to rip through markets.
The Asia trading day is in the final stretch and it’s looking very grim as the Trump tariff turmoil continues to roil global markets. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng is down 10.7% to a two-month low, Japan’s Nikkei 225 is sliding 6.9%, taking it into bear market territory having fallen more than 20% since its recent peak.
Japanese stocks traded sharply lower Sunday after dropping 9% last week, as Asian markets sold off sharply on fears U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff measures will slam economic growth.
The Nikkei 225 and Topix indexes were both down around 6%. Nikkei and Topix futures were briefly halted earlier in the session after their slide tripped circuit breakers.
